GPS Roles and Responsibilities
- Serves as the lead civilian agency within the U.S. government on GPS-related issues.
- Co-chairs the National Executive Committee for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing and its subordinate bodies.
- Provides resources to the Department of Defense for new, civil-unique GPS capabilities.
- Operates the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) to support aviation safety and efficiency.
- Chairs the Civil GPS Service Interface Committee (CGSIC).
- Applies GPS technology to a broad variety of governmental activities, including the development of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and intelligent transportation systems.
